Depart the Hacienda Forest View Hotel to start our first day of the ride from the hilltop community of Mitzpe Hila, with its breathtaking views of northern Israel. From there we descend to Rosh HaNikra at the northwestern corner of the country, along the Lebanese border. We take the opportunity to see the white cliffs, with their grottoes, disappearing into the Mediterranean Sea. We continue riding south along the coast through the town of Nahariya and on to Akko. After lunch we pass through the 18th-century walls and tour the Old City of Akko, including the remarkable “underground” Crusader city, and then return to the hotel.

Transfer to the majestic Bar’am National Park, with its remains of a 3rd-century synagogue, evidence of thriving Jewish life following the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE) and the end of the Bar Kochba revolt (135 CE). We begin our ride along the Lebanese border and stop to admire the view from Metzudat Ko’ach (literally, “the fortress of the 28”). Built in the 1930s by the British, it was a key position in the War of Independence. Riding along the ridge of the Naftali mountain range, we arrive at Kibbutz Misgav Am for lunch and to view its important strategic location. Transfer and check into HaGoshrim Hotel and Nature at Kibbutz HaGoshrim.

We are transported to the Golan Heights, pausing at the Valley of Tears memorial, site of decisive battles in the Yom Kippur War.  We ride down the slopes of the Golan towards the Hula Valley Nature Reserve, following the old oil-pipe road. (The fall is a fabulous time to be in the Hula Valley since millions of birds stop over in the area as they migrate from Europe to Africa.) We ride north along back roads to the amazing source of the Dan stream – one of the tributaries of the Jordan River – at the Tel Dan Nature Reserve. Following a tour, we return a short distance to the hotel and prepare for a restful and restorative Shabbat at Kibbutz HaGoshrim.

Sunday, October 17, 2021

This morning we visit the Druze Village of Mas’adeh at the foothills of Mt. Hermon and begin to ride south through the eastern sector of the Golan Heights. We stop at the Kuneitra Viewpoint to peer into Syrian territory and continue to ride past Kibbutz Ein Zivan and Alonei HaBashan. The ride ends at Katzrin, the largest Jewish town on the Golan Heights, where we visit the ancient Talmudic village reconstructed next to a 6th-century synagogue. From there we transfer to Mt. Bental, a defunct volcano that was once a strategic lookout point for the IDF. We eat a relaxing lunch, explore the bunkers left behind by the IDF, take in the breathtaking view of Mt. Hermon to the north, and look deep into the Syrian-held section of the Golan in the east. We also look to the west, where we have a bird’s eye view of Kibbutz Merom Golan, where we will have dinner and stay for the night.

Depart the kibbutz, biking southward on the plateau of the Golan Heights, then stopping at Gamla Nature Reserve. With the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) in the distance, we hear the story of the lost city and the siege laid by the Romans during the Great Revolt (66-70 CE).  Was this the “Masada of the North”? After learning about the natural phenomena in the area, we continue to ride down the slope of the Golan to the shores of the Kinneret, and follow the eastern coastline to Kibbutz Maagan, where the ride will end and we will break for lunch. Transfer to the Ramada Resort Hotel in Hadera for the last night of our trip.
